Know exactly what to expect after sticking your clones

Rooting Timeline Guide

A clear, step-by-step breakdown of what to expect from Day 1 to Day 14 after sticking clones. Designed for indoor growers using domes, trays, and propagation media.

Day 1

Stick clones into moist media. Mist leaves. Close dome fully.

Day 2

Clones may droop. Keep dome sealed. Mist again if needed.

Day 3

Stem base firms up. Callus formation begins internally.

Day 4

Callusing continues. Avoid tugging or checking for roots.

Day 5

Internal root development begins. Dome stays closed.

Day 6

Stem base may swell. Start brief dome venting if clones look strong.

Day 7

First roots may show. Increase airflow gradually.

Day 8

Roots may reach ½". Begin longer dome-off intervals.

Day 9

Test clones without dome. Only remove if they hold structure.

Day 10

Roots fill plug or cube. Start prepping for transplant.

Day 11

Check all clones. Pot up strongest. Leave slow ones longer.

Day 12

Feeder roots visible. Transplant with care to avoid damage.

Day 13

Discard weak clones. Sanitize trays for next run.

Day 14

All rooted clones should now be transplanted. Begin veg phase.

Why Rooting Takes Time

Clones go through a healing and transformation phase before roots emerge. Rushing the process or overhandling stems too early can lead to failure. This timeline helps you stay patient and know what to expect.

Rooting FAQ

Q: How long does it take for cannabis clones to root?
A: Most healthy clones begin showing roots between Day 7 and Day 10. Some strains may take up to 14 days. If you’re not seeing any signs by Day 12, check your temperature, humidity, and media moisture.

Q: What should the stem look like before roots appear?
A: The stem base will usually swell and form a white or opaque callus before roots emerge. This is a good sign that rooting is close.

Q: What if I don’t see roots by Day 10?
A: Don’t panic. Some clones take longer, especially if conditions were too cold or dry. Keep the dome on, avoid disturbing the stem, and double-check your environment.

Q: When is it safe to transplant?
A: Once roots are ½" to 1" long and branching, the clone is ready to plant. If roots are short or sparse, give it another day or two to strengthen.

Q: Should I mist every day?
A: Yes — especially during the first 3–5 days. Mist the dome walls and leaves lightly to maintain 80–95% humidity. Reduce misting once roots begin forming.
