Cordyceps, scientifically referred to as Ophiocordyceps sinensis and colloquially known as caterpillar fungus, holds significant prominence in Chinese medicine. This parasitic fungus belongs to the family Ophiocordycipitaceae and is recognized for its entomopathogenic nature, thriving on insects.

Typically found in high-altitude meadows exceeding 3,300 meters, particularly in the Himalayan regions of Nepal, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, and Tibet, Cordyceps primarily parasitizes the larvae of ghost moths. The fungus produces a fruiting body that has long been esteemed for its medicinal properties, serving as a valued herbal remedy in traditional Chinese medicine.
