Panellus stipticus, also known as the bitter oyster, astringent panus, or luminescent panellus mushroom, can be discovered across regions in Asia, Australia, and North America. The luminescent properties of this species are primarily observed at the edges of the gills and the points where the gills intersect with the stem and cap. However, in select strains, luminescence may be confined solely to the mycelium. The intensity of the glow tends to escalate during spore maturation, lending a captivating visual aspect to its habitat.

While Panellus stipticus is categorized as non-edible, it is recognized as non-poisonous. Currently, ongoing research explores its potential applications in the bioremediation of land afflicted by organic pollutants, as well as its ability to transform industrial residues abundant in toxic polyphenols. These investigations highlight the multifaceted nature of this mushroom species, showcasing its potential contributions to environmental conservation and waste management practices.

This is a non edible mushroom, but is considered nonpoisonous. It is currently being studied for it's potential use in the bioremediation of land contaminated by organic pollutants, and to convert industrial wastes rich in toxic polyphenols.
